If you choose to make some stops along the way, you will visit either one, two or three cities from the four choices we have available, which are Aveiro, Fátima, Óbidos and Nazaré. Every single one of these cities have a completely different atmosphere and a plethora of attractions worth visiting.
Aveiro: originally a fishing village, it flourished during the Medieval period due to its salt pans and maritime trade. Nowadays, this city is known as “Portugal’s Venice”, due to its charming canals and the colorful moliceiro boats that navigate them. These canals exist thanks to the Ria de Aveiro, a stunning nearby lagoon that is usually teeming with bird life.
The local cuisine is also one of the highlights of this city, particularly the famous Ovos Moles, a sweet treat that originated here.
Fátima: this city is the religious epicenter of Portugal, due to the Sanctuary of Fátima, which is one of the most important sanctuaries in the world for catholics. This deeply religious site was built in the exact location where the Virgin Mary appeared in front of the 3 shepherds, in 1917. In the sanctuary there are several attractions to visit, each of them having great religious significance.
Óbidos: this medieval gem founded by the Celts, exudes history thanks to its ancient walls and cobbled streets and in the past, this city was offered as a wedding gift to the Portuguese queens.
Nowadays, this city is a tourist hotspot due to the unique medieval charm it exudes. Visitors love to wander through the narrow alleys, explore the Gothic churches and try the Ginjinha, a local liqueur. Each July, the town comes alive during the Medieval Market, transporting visitors back in time with colorful costumes and lively festivities.
Nazaré: this picturesque fishing village turned into a surfers' paradise due to the gigantic waves at Praia do Norte, where daredevil surfers challenge themselves against nature’s might and visitors flock to witness these waves.
The abundance of fresh fish and seafood makes this city one of the best places to eat in Portugal, for those that like fish.
You’ll have an hour to explore any of these cities, with a slightly longer break in the destination where you decided to have lunch. This transfer ends in your hotel in Lisbon.
